Lifelong scholar, learner and educator, the late James E. Miller honored with named programs

The University of West Florida Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering recently received a gift from Diane Miller to name the Bachelor and Master of Science in Computer Science programs in honor of her late husband, James E. Miller. The funds will be used in part for equipment and faculty support to enable some advanced research programs. Miller was a consummate scholar, learner and life-long educator. A legacy and naming event was held at the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering on UWF’s Pensacola campus on May 3.

UWF students win first place in the 2024 Southeastern Hedge Fund Strategy Competition

University of West Florida Lewis Bear Jr. College of Business students took home a first-place win at the 2024 Southeastern Hedge Fund Strategy Competition. The competition is hosted by the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. The student team beat out students from 28 other universities, including Duke, University of Florida and University of Texas. The two students will split a $10,000 award.

UWF awarded a nearly $1.7 million grant to train biomedical students

The University of West Florida has earned an approximately $1.7 million, five-year renewal grant from the National Institutes of Health to mentor and train the next generation of biomedical scientists. The undergraduate research training initiative for student enhancement, known as U-RISE, scholars program promotes broader participation in the biomedical research workforce by expanding the pool of well-trained scientists earning a Ph.D.
