A South Dakota Flintstones visitor attraction has announced it’s to close just days after the theme park’s 50th anniversary.

One of the park’s six owners, Joe Speckel, confirmed the closure would come on the weekend of the park’s 50th anniversary as the owners “move into new chapters in their lives.”

Speckel also confirmed that Custer Hospitality, a company which runs several hotels in the local area, had purchased the Black Hills site, but that a decision had not been made on what would become of the attraction.

The 250,000sq m (62-acre) Flintstones Bedrock City in Custer first opened its doors in 1966. Notable sections of the park include a drive-in restaurant serving ‘bronto burgers’, an 1880’s miniature train ride and the prehistoric fictional town of Bedrock, which includes the home of the Flintstones, a working outdoor cinema, a heatre, police department and more.

Interiors and exteriors at the pre-historical theme park are all decorated in the style of the show with costumed characters going about their daily lives in Bedrock for visitors to enjoy.
